I had a little break between posts but here’s the next in the 2.0 series of The Space Library – previously only broadcast on the sadly departed Basic.fm. A fair bit of Library, or Library-ish things, below and there are some newbies to the Library including Pole, Crepuscule’s The French Impressionists, Johanna Group, The Bugaloos, Jerry Goldsmith,Michel Fugain, Garvarentz, Stu Phillips and Grauzone. I even snuck in a Human League B-Side that still slays.

Here's the latest selection from the Space Library - carefully curated and a little bit spacey. The wondrous Kahimi Karie gets us started with a lovely electronic puzzle called 'Blue Orb', a short diversion into the world of Stereolab then leads us into Patrick Cowley's porn soundtrack music (believe the hype, it's excellent). I'll skim through the rest but Family Fodder again prove that they were the band that should have received far more accolades - and the same goes for the Gentle People whose 'Superstar' mixes a deep space ambiance with E.L.O. vocoder processed vocals. Let's do this.

This program is usually made in Australia, however this episode was made in Japan. Well, not really, but I was in Japan at the time it went to air so indulge me. The playlist for Transmission 2.6 was entirely music by Japanese artists with a small bit of poetic licence to include Kraftwerk singing in Japanese (which lead nicely into P5 sampling the same song). There's some funny nonsense from the likes of Picky Picnic and Hikashu, a knockout piece from the Crue-L Grand Orchestra selected by the superb Kahimi Karie for her Crystallization compilation album, the odd bit of anime music, the delightful bedroom recordings of Akane Hosaka, Cibo Matto's Yuka Honda, and Sketch show, the band that reunites Haruomi Hosono & Yukihiro Takahashi (2 thirds of Yellow Magic Orchestra).

1 - Technopolis - Yellow Magic Orchestra (Solid State Survivor - 1979)
2 - Untitled 1 - Space Machine (Cosmos From Diode Ladder Filter - 2001)
3 - Space Travel with Teddybear - Elektel (Space Travel with Teddybear - 2002)
4 - My Toast Time - Picky Picnic (Ha Ha! Tarachine - 1985)
5 - Silent Object - Masami Tsuchiya (Rice Music - 1982)
6 - Oriental Melon Man - Asei Kobayashi & Micky Yoshino (Hausu - 1977)
7 - Muscles and Fruits - Hikashu (Hikashu History - 2001)
8 - The Metamorphosis - Chumei Watanabe (Uchuu Keiji Gavan (aka 'Space Sheriff Gavan') - 1982)
9 - Dentaku - Kraftwerk (Pocket Calculator - 1981)
10 - Contact - Pizzicato Five (Romantique '96 - 1995)

Birds. Clocks. Lurid colours. What does it all mean? I don't know, why are you asking me such things? Let's strap in for the latest transmission for the Space Library, the repository of all things musically rather wonderful, many of which have been forgotten.

No longer.

Deux will coax you in with a 7" single b-side, really, this much excellence consigned to a flipside? There should be a law. From there it's all manner of groovy choral from The Free Design, Fad Gadget in a hospital, German space exploration via television, Broadcast making an audio stew of the music of Miki Furukawa, the Future Bible Heroes at their most heartbreaking-ist, and Hugo Montenegro wants to be a cowboy. And, scene.

The Space Library has been delving into the galactic archives, this time with SL virgins like the baroque-pop of The Jumping Jacques, a little glam stomp from Hot Rocks - and is that really The Popinjays?

The Flying Lizards recruit the magnificence of Patti Paladin and Michael Nyman to flesh out 'Hands 2 Take', Japanese techno-poppers Capsule, in an uncharacteristically non-pop moment, and Blackpool's little known and decidedly lo-fi Le Lu/Lu's get it down on tape, in the post and out to the cassette compilation indie-world. We even delve into a little campery with an 'Are You Being Served' set-ette. For the next hour at least, we hope you're free.

It's 2014, very much so, and time for the next series of The Space Library. Back with a new look, but very few changes on the musical front as we continue to delve into the musical road less travelled. To get started this year there's some Space Library frequent fliers - artists such as Laurie Anderson, Tom Dissevelt, Philippe Laurent, Pram and Moon Wiring Club from the excellent new album, a bunch of Australians (for that is where this show originates), all defunct but all marvelous - The Reels, Equal Local and B[if]tek and more excellent newcomers such as the amazing Japanese dance troupe World Order.

1 - Machines Work - B(if)tek (2020 - 2000)

3 - Midnight Opening - Moon Wiring Club (A Fondness For Fancy Hats - 2013)
4 - The Visitor From Inner Space - Tom Dissevelt (Song Of The Second Moon: The Sonic Vibrations Of Tom Dissevelt/Kid Baltan - 1968)
